On 26 April 2018 the European Commission’s EPALE (Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe) held its seventh thematic conference on the theme ‘Action culturelle: quelles démarches pédagogiques pour l’éducation des adultes?’ [Cultural action: different pedagogical approaches to adult education]. Held in Paris, the event brought together various European educational and cultural actors, resulting in a highly productive exchange of ideas.
The FEDE was an active participant at the event, which was also attended by representatives of the Erasmus programme, UNESCO, Transplanisphère, the Ligue de l’enseignement Nord-Pas-de-Calais [Nord-Pas-de-Calais Teaching League] and members of civil society.
Alice Jacques, policy officer for Claude Vivier Le Got, shared the FEDE’s expertise on lifelong education and learning.
Lectures and workshops gave participants the opportunity to express their views on the links between culture and education. The value of such links was discussed, as well as how they might be used as tools for individual emancipation and to forge intergenerational ties in Europe, given the rise of isolationist attitudes.
Numerous projects aiming to foster such links were presented: ‘Grow from Seeds’ and ‘Here we are’ (Transplanisphère); ‘Greeters’; ‘Objets perdus’ [‘lost property’] and ‘Mygrantour’. The projects all centre around the same theme: bringing together culture and education to create a more open and sensitive society.
The FEDE, as an active member of the working groups ‘Lifelong Education’ and ‘Heritage and Creation in Europe’ of the Education and Culture Committee of the Conference of INGOs, is closely following the debate in this area.
